Lavender Essential Oil (lavandula angustifolia)

“Steam distilled from the flowering plants grown at the Young Living farms in Simiane-la-Rotonde, France, and Mona, Utah, Lavender is the most versatile essential oil. Its refreshing, relaxing scent has balancing properties that also bring a sense of calm.”

Lavender essential oil

Aside from being my favourite oil, I’m starting with Lavender for many more good reasons.First off it’s popular! Most of you have heard of it, seen it or would be able to recognize the fragrance. You’ve probably already encountered it in spa treatments and products, soaps, candles, lotions, growing in gardens, and even delicately gracing your food :)

But most importantly it’s benefits are manymaking it the most versatile oil out there. Lavender contains medicinal properties that are anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-fungal, anti-oxidant, antibacterial and antimicrobial. It also has antispasmodic, analgesic, detoxifying, hypotensive, and sedative effects making it the best known healing oil.

In other words this oil is a powerhouse while both calming & soothing. And if you enjoy it’s fragrance this is the first oil I’d recommend starting with.

Here’s a list of common uses (I know there’s even more out there too):

  • neutralize odours and infuse for fragrance
  • neutralize swelling & pain
  • treat sunburns and insect bites
  • treat various skin disorders (i.e. acne)
  • ease sinus headaches and migraines
  • repel moths, insect and bugs (i.e. fleas, ticks and lice)
  • prevent dandruff or hair loss and promote healthy hair
  • improve digestion and stimulate urination
  • fight bacterial and fungal infections
  • ease coughs, colds and reduces fevers
  • improve respiratory problems
  • prevents scarring
  • ease motion sickness and improve blood circulation
  • treat insomnia, depression, anxiety and stress

But most importantly is lavender oil safe? All oils are powerful so with this in mind remember there are always risks. Lavender however is one of the safest oils available – meaning that it can be applied to adult skin “neat” (without being diluted), can be inhaled directly from the bottle and it’s one of few oils safe for use with babies and children (diluted). I believe that using pure therapeutic grade essential oils like lavender is one of the best holistic approaches to a balanced life of health and wellness. However there are important guidelines to use for each oil out there. I’ll be writing a post on Essential Oils & Safety next for a more in-depth discussion about the proper and safe use of oils in your home. Remember to always discuss every approach you take with your trusted health care professionals.

All-in-all lavender oil is just one of many great essential oils. And at $38.49 per bottle (approximately 250 drops) not only is it affordable but it’s countless uses make it a worthwhile supplement towards your overall health & wellness.

Here are how many Young Living Blends that contain lavender (as you can see it’s a YL favourite too):
